What's the hype behind Pilates?
With a world full of knowledge and ideas, it is difficult to know who is telling you the truth and who is out to make a quick buck.
You may have heard the word Pilates before and thought I bet this is another new craze, the next Les Mills or maybe even ‘is this a new dessert I haven't heard of?’. But in fact, Pilates has been around for almost a century. Developed by Joseph Pilates, an innovator of exercise, who wanted a way to rehabilitate World War I soldiers with a low impact but highly effective regime of strength and conditioning. It has been adapted all over the world first for professional dancers, to athletes and now to the average Joe and Jane wanting to increase their fitness.
Pilates combines cardio, flexibility, strength and endurance to form an all-rounded workout that can make even the most highly-trained athletes stop for a breath. AND the fantastic thing is, it is all done with body weight! With a combination of pulses, holds, core activation and postural control the benefits of Pilates can be endless.
Now the next question is what class will best suit my needs?
Classes can vary in intensity, strength and flexibility. If you are someone who has been out of the fitness world for a while, it is always best to start with a beginner class and work your way up. If you have been going to the gym for a while or have been exercising regularly but looking for a change, feel free to jump into a more challenging class to really push your body to new limits.
Wherever you are on your fitness journey, I can guarantee there is a PILATES CLASS out their made just for you!
